Facebook Group Discussion

One of our Facebook group members, Shelley T.  posted this question:

Do people find the diet alone replaces their need for preventatives? Or does it simply enhance the success of their preventatives? Or does it depend on the person?

Here are some of the many responses she received:

*Lori L.: I am 100% off all medications of any kind. The diet alone did the trick. Weaning off everything wasn’t fun, but SOOOO worth it!

*Steve A.: I got off all that … my neuro even supported that after hearing how successful I’d been with the diet. He even discharged me since he’s no longer prescribing any meds for migraines to me.. yep, I took “dopamax” for awhile as well as many other different types of meds but no more!! woooo

*Donna W.:  I tried for YEARS to get off my preventative, only to end up in the ER every time. After 5 months on this diet, I was able to wean off completely. It is a miracle!!!!

*Doris B.:  I started weaning myself off of topamax after 1 week on the MM program. It took a few weeks of tapering off to be totally off of it. The only preventive I now take Magnesium and 400mg B2.

*Frankie M.:  I have pretty much been able to avoid preventatives (aspirin for me), and in the beginning I totally avoided caffeine. Now I rarely take a plain aspirin and am once again able to have my cup of buttered coffee in the morning. In my case, I’m sure it’s the diet!

*Lisa G.:  I don’t take preventatives any more. I’m freeeeeeeeee!

An excerpt from The Chatter:

Q: When Will I Know I’m Out of Rebound? How many days should pass without a headache to know I’ve broken the cycle? As I am prone to have a headache with overexertion (even a gentle yoga class will set it off with one downward dog), I’m wondering when I can safely resume moderate exercise.

A from Dr. T:

That’s somewhat of a tricky question, as it will in part depend on how long you’ve been in rebound, and what kind of medication consumption pattern you’ve had during that period.

But the brain has to reach a new equilibrium that no longer includes the med or meds you’ve been taking. Generally speaking, 5-7 headache free days is an indication that you’re mostly through it, but not likely to be back at equilibrium.

If your head still hurts after bending, downward dog (a great litmus test for rebound!), then that’s a pretty good sign it’s still there.

There’s likely some degree of hypersensitivity that lingers for weeks to months; the literature on rebound says 6 months or more for full recovery after the last dose is taken…

You don’t have to bite off the entire rebound animal in one bite, but simply having an awareness of its huge, and continually working on getting out of the cycle.

Aim primarily for progress (less abortive medication over time).
